Needs for future support

LACEEP is currently looking for an interested donor willing to join an exciting and well-established capacity building effort, with a proven track record of scientific excellence and high accountability to our donors and our focus region, and with strong south-south collaborations and networking (both within the LAC region, but also in relation to our sister organizations in Asia and Africa).

What have we accomplished so far?

During its first five years, LACEEP has received 372 proposals. Within the nine workshops organized during this period, 104 new applicants have been invited to present their research proposals and 50 research fellowships have been granted across the region (see Figure 1.a). Seventeen policy briefs and nineteen working papers have been published and others are in currently in the process of being published.

The funded research projects have looked into a variety of issues and landscapes such as climate change effects in Mexico and Brazil, the mining sector in Peru, water issues in the agricultural sector in Brazil and in urban areas in Ecuador, marine protected areas in Colombia to name a few and fisheries in Argentina. This research has been published in well known field journals such as Ecological Economics, Marine Policy and Fisheries Research among others.

In addition, we have trained 245 environmental practitioners with different backgrounds and disciplines in environmental and development economics. Trainees from different sectors such as academia, NGO, and from governmental institutions have benefited from this training. They have also come from different parts of the region (see Figure 1.b). Courses have covered highly relevant and current topics like environmental policy implementation and evaluation, economic valuation, climate change, and natural resource economics. They have been taught by renowned researchers and professor from well-known universities from Canada, United States, Sweden and Latin America.

Where are we heading?

During its first five years, LACEEPĀ“s outreach and deepening in the region have been important to influence decision making and academic achievements in the field of environmental and resource economics. Nonetheless, own experience and observation of the program's performance has encouraged us to visualize some adjustments in the program that guarantee in the future increasing our impact in the region. To do that, we propose for the following years:

- To spread knowledge, tools and recommendations from rigorous academic research.

- To support local governments implement effective environmental and governance mechanisms.

- To scale out outreach and deepening.

- To contribute on policy incidence for poverty alleviation.

- To strength gender equality in research.

- To open the program to researchers that can work based in the Spanish language.

- To open the program to the possibility of supply-driven proposals.

- To open the program to other training activities.
